Janet Street-Porter exposed the scar on her nose when she took stock of her health after surgery last Wednesday.
The 73-year-old woman appeared on Loose Women today because she admitted she was “in a state” before the skin cancer surgery found on her nose.
She also called on viewers to have doctors check for blemishes and skin changes.
Asked by host Andrea McLean about how she was doing, Janet replied that she was “fine” and explained the procedure she had undergone, which resulted in a scar on her nose.
She removed the bandage today on the program and showed the scar.
“I had a small spot on my nose that I thought was an insect bite,” she said. “A dermatologist referred me to a surgeon who told me that it was a basal cell carcinoma, which is a form of skin cancer.
“So last Wednesday I went and they anesthetized my nose … basically it’s the kind of surgery where they just cut out the top of your skin and then they go analyze it, so they don’t remove only the bare minimum of cells.
“It takes a few hours, then they stitch it up.”
She added: “The surgeon told me he was very confident that in a few months you would not see the scar at all. And tomorrow I’m going to have the stitches so next week probably I will will look a little bit different.
“At the end of the day, it’s just a scar, and I still have a nose and a face and everything and I feel very positive about it.”
Giving advice to viewers, she said, “Look at the little blemishes on your skin and especially the moles, if they change size or shape or anything … which I always did I’ve always been careful, I’ve always put factor 50 on my face.
“Since I mentioned it on Loose Women last week, hundreds of you have contacted me to say that you have had the same procedure or that you are waiting for it. There is nothing to fear, do the!”
