DThe data that Italian civil defense announces to the nation at its daily press conference at 6 p.m. in the evening has recently given rise to cautious optimism. The number of new infections detected every day has been falling slightly for days; that of the daily deaths fluctuates, but at least shows no more frightening growth.
In total, Italy had recorded more than 80,500 coronavirus cases by Thursday. Nearly 8,200 people have died since the epidemic broke out in Codogno, Lombardy, just over a month ago.
The regions in the south of the country have not yet seen the feared exponential increase in infections and serious illnesses. In absolute numbers, around ten times as many Covid-19 patients were treated with intensive medical care and artificial ventilation on Wednesday in the particularly affected region of Lombardy in northern Italy, as in Campania with the capital Naples.
