A third of humanity is now confined but Jair Bolsonaro does not want to hear about these measures. The President of Brazil denounced Tuesday the decisions taken against the coronavirus by different states and municipalities of his country.

“The authorities of certain states and municipalities must give up the concept of scorched earth: the prohibition of transport, the closing of shops and mass containment,” said Jair Bolsonaro in a speech broadcast on radio and television.

“We must maintain jobs and preserve the supply of families,” he added, approaching the position of Donald Trump who believes that “the cure can be worse than the problem”.

Jair Bolsonaro downplayed the risks of the Covid-19 pandemic, which has already killed more than 18,000 people worldwide and forced a third of humanity to adhere to strict containment measures. On Tuesday, Brazil recorded 2,201 cases of Covid-19 and 46 deaths. However, the deficiencies in the healthcare system, the poverty and insanitary conditions in which a large part of the population lives threaten to aggravate the epidemic in the leading economy of Latin America.

Media accused of spreading “hysteria”

“The risk group is that of people over 60. So why close the schools? “Annoyed Jair Bolsonaro.

The far-right president accused the media of spreading “hysteria” in the face of the pandemic and said that Brazil was safe, he said, thanks to its warm climate and its predominantly young population.

Faced with the pandemic, several states and cities in Brazil have adopted measures to close businesses and public services and contain the population, notably the state of Sao Paulo, the richest in Brazil.

“The virus has arrived in Brazil, we are fighting it and it will be over soon. Our life must go on. Jobs must be maintained. Families must continue to live. Yes, we have to get back to normal, ”he added.

But in the Bolsonaro camp, voices are rising to denounce his attitude. He particularly disagreed with the Minister of Health Luiz Henrique Mandetta who no longer had the right to speak at a press conference.

Some residents also denounce the attitude of the head of state. For several days, they have been showing their anger with pots and pans at their window.

About ten days ago, Brazilian media announced that the president was infected after one of his assistants was diagnosed with Covid-19. But Jair Bolsonaro took the test and said he was negative.
