European regulator recognizes risk of thrombosis as a side effect of AstraZeneca vaccine

The agency noted that blood clots are often accompanied by a drop in platelet counts and are usually seen within two weeks of a shot. Most of the cases were recorded in women under the age of 60. A possible explanation for thrombosis with a drop in platelet counts in the EMA was an immune response leading to a condition similar to that sometimes seen in patients treated with heparin (a drug that reduces blood clotting).
