Given the current situation, with all the facilities closed, museums around the world are preparing to celebrate their International Day, the great event organized since 1977 by the International Committee of Museums (ICOM) every May 18, a virtual form. The activities will take place from Saturday 16 to Monday 18 May while the activity aimed at the professional sector, on Tuesday 19 and Wednesday 20 May. In the counties of Girona there are many centers that have decided to join the celebration adapting to the circumstances.

From the General Direction of the Cultural Heritage, with the collaboration of the Center of Telecommunications and Technologies of the Information (CTTI) and of the General Direction of Communication of the Department of the Presidency, have promoted 20 guided virtual visits that will realize live through the patrimoni.gencat Youtube channel. They will last approximately 20 minutes and will be run by museum directors, educators, curators, curators of exhibitions, etc.

The start will take place on Saturday, from 11 am, with a tour of the headquarters of the Museum of Archeology of Catalonia (MAC) in Empúries. It will be followed by visits to the Empordà museums in Figueres, Can Garriga in Lloret de Mar and the Palamós Fishing Museum. In the afternoon, you can visit the headquarters of Girona and Ullastret of the MAC, the Museum of Art of Girona and the Anchovy and Salt of L’Escala.

On Sunday, May 17, visits to museums in Sitges, Cambrils, El Vendrell, Amposta, Vic, Olèrdola, Reus and Sant Cugat del Vallès will take place. Finally, the International Museum Day, on Monday 18 May, will be the turn of the national museums: National Museum of Science and Technology of Terrassa, National Archaeological Museum of Tarragona, Museum of Archeology of Catalonia and National Museum of Art of Catalonia.

The Open Windows online initiative brings together 75 museums from around the country that have been recorded with their own media, mostly mobile devices, to show a taste of the rich heritage of museum collections and the work of professionals who work there. Through 5-minute audiovisual pills, museum staff, artists, specialist business guides and educators, among others, open the windows of museums to tell stories and invite citizens to make culture and visit them. when they reopen.

Accessibility measures have also been taken for the deaf community, both signatories and oralists. The virtual tours will be offered in Catalan Sign Language (LSC) and the video capsules will be subtitled. In both cases, by interpreters and professionals from the Federation of Deaf People of Catalonia (FESOCA).

Parallel activities

The Palafrugell Cork Museum and the La Farinera Ecomuseum in Castelló d’Empúries have also joined the virtual commemorative events. From the Museu del Suro, different activities are offered on the networks, following what has been done during the more than two months of confinement and joining the different proposals of the Catalan museums: they will be posted on the museum’s website, at the “joemquedoacasa” section, a virtual visit to the museum and “open doors” with the title The world of cork in five objects. For its part, the Flour Ecomuseum joins the celebration with a series of activities that will take place this Saturday. The most outstanding activity invites you to get to know the machinery of La Farinera, in particular the mills. This action is part of the # DIM2020 program organized by the Service of Museums and Protection of Movable Property of the Generalitat de Catalunya.

Finally, the Girona Art Museum invites you to answer the question: “What does the Girona Art Museum mean to you?”.
