Dhe German Ethics Council supports measures taken to curb Covid-19 infections, even if they made great sacrifices for all people in this country. Restrictions on freedom, however, would have to be continually examined with a view to the diverse social and economic consequences, and gradually relaxed as soon as possible, according to a Council opinion published on Friday. Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn asked the committee a so-called ad hoc statement a week ago, which was passed unanimously after intensive discussions.
With its statement under the motto “Solidarity and Responsibility in the Corona Crisis”, the Ethics Council, which includes lawyers, doctors, philosophers and theologians, wants to offer an ethical guide to the dramatic situations of action and decision that are threatening the health system.
“The core ethical conflict is that a long-term, high-quality, efficient health system must be secured and, at the same time, serious side effects for the population and society must be kept as low as possible,” says the Council opinion.
