‘The Takeover’ is in full effect. ESPN presents a virtual question and answer session with undisputed lightweight champion Teofimo López this Tuesday in February at 8 pm ET on ESPN +. The event, with Crystina Poncher and Andre Ward as hosts, will be available free to all ESPN + subscribers.
Lopez (16-0, 12 KOs) is coming off defeating Vasiliy Lomachenko in October to unify all four lightweight titles, the first to do so at lightweight in the four-belt era (since 1988). Lopez is currently ESPN’s No. 1 lightweight boxer, ranking fifth on ESPN’s pound-for-pound list.
The 23-year-old fighter of Honduran blood not only established himself in 2020 as the best lightweight on the planet, obtaining several accolades as a result of his victory over Lomachenko, but he also placed himself at the forefront of a new generation of boxers who provides him enthusiasm and excitement to sport. The group includes, among others, Gervonta Davis, Devin Haney, Ryan Garcia and Shakur Stevenson.
Lopez recently said he plans to stay at 135 pounds, aiming for a defense against IBF mandatory challenger George Kambosos, with or without Top Rank. Belts are extremely important to Lopez, and he intends to dispatch his must-see opponents before taking on the budding stars of his category like Haney, Davis and Garcia.
After that, López would target the winner of the junior welterweight fight between José Ramírez and Josh Taylor, who each hold two of the four major titles in the 140-pound division.
Teofimo López dons a Joe Burrow jersey after dethroning Richard Commey at MSG in December 2019, similar to when he wore a Kyler Murray jersey in his victory the previous December.
