In total, Italy had recorded more than 80,500 coronavirus cases by Thursday. Nearly 8,200 people have died since the epidemic broke out in Codogno, Lombardy, just over a month ago.

The regions in the south of the country have not yet seen the feared exponential increase in infections and serious illnesses. In absolute numbers, around ten times as many Covid-19 patients were treated with intensive medical care and artificial ventilation on Wednesday in the particularly affected region of Lombardy in northern Italy, as in Campania with the capital Naples.
