East Mississippi Community College has fired Buddy Stephens, its head football coach since 2012. Stephens, known for his role in the Netflix docuseries 'Last Chance U', had recently criticized changes to the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges playoff format. The college has named an interim coach, but coverage does not yet specify who will take over permanently. Stephens' departure follows his public criticism of the new playoff format.

The coach had previously expressed his disapproval, stating that the changes would negatively impact the competitive landscape. His outspokenness may have contributed to the college's decision to part ways. Rice's background and qualifications have not been detailed. The change in leadership affects the team's immediate future.

The interim coach will need to quickly establish a rapport with the players and implement a game plan. The college's athletic department will also need to address the permanent coaching position, which could involve a national search or an internal promotion. The team's performance in the upcoming season will be closely watched, as will the college's handling of the coaching transition.
