“In recent days, we are a number of doctors in the sector to be mobilized to create a center where we will only receive patients with or suspected of Covid. This place, which should open on Monday, concerns an area that includes between 80,000 and 100,000 inhabitants. The town hall of Les Mureaux has agreed to provide us with the ground floor of one of the city’s schools. This will allow us to specifically treat these patients.
Up to now, in the medical house where I work, with several other health professionals, we have organized ourselves to welcome the patients with Covid at the end of the day, and the others in the morning. On the one hand, this organization is not possible for everyone, especially in small medical offices: places are sometimes cramped, patients risk crossing paths with each other, certain neighbors complain … On the other hand, the number of affected patients actually increases. For my part, I see at least ten a day. The same goes for my colleagues.
“We also need to have general practitioners start to prepare the next steps”
The operation of this consultation center will be voluntary, open to all healthcare professionals in the sector, whether they are doctors, nurses or others. By opening this place, our goal is also to be able to relieve hospitals, by absorbing all the requests of those who today have the reflex to go to the emergency room or to dial 15 without being in serious condition. At the start of the crisis, the order was to go only through the 15. Result: these centers are overwhelmed, including on the lines reserved for health professionals. Yesterday, I called them to ask that one of my patients be hospitalized: after twenty minutes of music on hold, I finally hung up and managed otherwise.
In the longer term, it is also necessary that we, general practitioners, begin to prepare for the future. Confinement will have psychological and physical consequences. We don’t really feel it in our offices yet, but it is obvious that anxiety and stress disorders will be revealed. Other consequences will also be linked to lack of physical exercise, such as back pain or muscle problems. “
